Legal provisions - Electoral Law
• A person shall present himself for nomination for election to a local council either as, mayor, chairperson or as a councillor. (Public elections act, article 104)
• Articles 58 to 96 shall with the necessary modification apply to local council elections. (Public elections act, article 105)
• A candidate shall be nominated in writing by 3 voters of the electoral area for which he intends to contest an election and shall not be nominated in more than one electoral area. For every 3 candidates nominated, one of them shall be female. (Public elections act, article 58)

• There shall be, in public elections, the following reserved seats: ... 30% ward seats reserved in each locality, specified in the second schedule, shall be reserved exclusively for female candidates contesting local council election. Where a political party fails to comply with this, the Electoral commission shall reject the party's list of candidates. (Gender empowerment act, article 2)
