According to article 17 of the Constitution, "the State must take all measures, including legislative measures, needed to ensure that both genders are equally represented in all institutions and agencies of government at every level; and women constitute at least half the membership of all Commissions and other elective and appointed governmental bodies established by or under this Constitution or any Act of Parliament"... The State must take positive measures to rectify gender discrimination and imbalances resulting from past practices and policies.
According to article 124, "the National Assembly consists of, for the life of the first four Parliaments after the effective date, an additional sixty women members, six from each of the provinces into which Zimbabwe is divided, elected through a system of proportional representation based on the votes cast for candidates representing political parties in a general election for constituency members in the provinces; a further additional ten youth members, that is, persons aged from twenty-one to thirty-five years of age, one from each of the provinces into which Zimbabwe is divided, elected under a party-list system of proportional representation in which male and female candidates are listed alternately. Political parties must ensure that ten of the sixty women members are under the age of thirty-five; women with disabilities are represented on their party lists; and young women with disabilities are represented on their party lists in terms of an Act of Parliament.”

Lower House:
• Each electoral province shall be allocated six seats reserved for women in the National Assembly. (Electoral Act, article 45C)
• Party lists for the elections to the National Assembly shall consist of women only for the reserved seats in conformity with section 124(1)(b) of the Constitution. (Electoral Act, article 45E)
Upper House:
• Each electoral province shall be allocated six seats in the Senate. (Electoral Act, article 45C)
• The Senate, conforming to the requirements of section 120(2)(b) of the Constitution, must have male and female party-list candidates listed alternately, the list being headed by a female candidate. (Electoral Act, article 45E)
• In the Senate, one of two persons nominated in accordance with Seventh Schedule for the election as a representative of people with disabilities must be female. (Electoral Act, article 45A)

Time limit: one-time quota; sunset clause
Sunset clause: there are additional 60 seats for women for the life of the first four Parliaments after the effective date (2013). Therefore, this clause will end after the 2033 parliamentary elections.
