Article 16 of the Constitution of South Sudan states that ‘All levels of government shall: promote women’s participation in public life and their representation in the legislative and executive organs by at least twenty-five per cent as an affirmative action to redress imbalances created by history, customs, and traditions’.

Lower House:
• The National Legislative Assembly shall be composed of 35% women members, elected on the basis of proportional representation at the national level from closed party lists. There are party lists and women lists, a voter gets one vote for each. The total number of members of the National Legislative Assembly shall be 332 representatives. (National Elections Act (Article 60 (2) (b)).
Upper House:
• The Commission shall establish additional guidelines for matters related to the procedure for election of the members of the Council of States (Article 60 (6)).
